A 45-year-old Lafayette man is recovering from major injuries he suffered last week after colliding with a truck during a bicycle ride in Alamo. The injured man, Anthony Low, is member of the Taleo bicycle racing team, and suffered a dislocated shoulder, broken ribs, a punctured lung and a cut to his head when he was thrown onto the street as a result of the bicycle crash. Low was wearing a protective helmet, which undoubtedly saved him from more serious head injuries.
The pickup truck he collided with was driven by a 28 year old construction worker from Yuba City. The truck, which was towing a utility trailer, attempted to make a turn from Danville Boulevard on to Las Trampas Road in Alamo when he struck Low. The driver of the truck stopped after he realized a collision had taken place, and Low was rushed to John Muir Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery. The California Highway Patrol is in the process of investigating the cause of the accident.
Bicycle accidents are a common occurrence in the East Bay, where there are so many great places to ride. Motorists often fail to yield the right of way to bicyclists, or take the proper precautions when making turns or changing lanes. These mistakes can often have catastrophic results. As in this case, bicyclists can be seriously injured even when wearing the proper protective equipment when the accident involves a motor vehicle.
Serious injuries sustained as a result of bicycle accidents, especially where a head injury is involved, can have life-changing consequences.
